Bayer Leverkusen have signed Borja Iglesias on loan for the remainder of the season to bolster their attack. The Real Betis forward will complete his medical tests in the upcoming days, after which he will be officially revealed as a new signing.
The Bundesliga club will pay €1 million as the loan fee, and also have the option to make the transfer permanent for €8 million. But, it is not a mandatory clause as part of their agreement. Iglesias will be replacing the club’s starting centre-forward Victor Boniface, who will be sidelined with an adductor injury until April.
Borja Iglesias to sign on loan for Bayer Leverkusen
Xabi Alonso’s title challenging side have been handed a boost in attack with the return of Patrik Schick. However, his regular injury problems have caused the club to exercise caution and recruit another forward to share the workload with.
The 31-year-old has scored only two goals in 18 appearances across all competitions for Betis. His game time has been quite limited as well, registering only 871 minutes on the pitch.
But there is optimism that Alonso could get the best out of Borja Iglesias, owing to his physical prowess and similarity to Boniface in terms of playing style.
Leverkusen are currently four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table, and could emerge as the shock winners of the league title in May. But, there is still a long way to go for the upstarts till they claim the shield.
