Believed to have originated in the United States, the Black Friday craze has now become a worldwide phenomenon, including in India, where people anticipate massive savings on goods. According to reports, the earliest evidence of Black Friday dates as far back as 1961, where it was coined by police to describe the heavy traffic and large number of shoppers that were recorded the day after Thanksgiving. Interestingly, it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005, which does not come as much of a surprise because shoppers wake up in the wee hours of the morning to queue outside stores. The day has gained so much traction that some parts of the world have made it an official holiday, while in some cases, it forms part of an extended weekend after Thanksgiving.
