Chelsea have triggered an option to extend Billy Gilmour’s contract for another year, with his new deal running until 2024. The Cobham academy graduate spent the last season on loan at Norwich City, who eventually got relegated.
The midfielder made 28 appearances for the Canaries during his spell on loan, earning a lot of Premier League experience in the process. And with the season ending, he is returning to Chelsea with his future yet uncertain.
Billy Gilmour’s contract extended till 2024
The Scotland international was signed at the age of 16 for £500,000 from Rangers. He has been with Chelsea ever since, and broke into the first team under Frank Lampard. The former Chelsea manager played Billy Gilmour in important Cup games, such as the one against Liverpool where he was named the man of the match.
But with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, the youngster received less game time as Chelsea eventually won the Champions League. Owing to concerns over lack of playing time, the midfielder was loaned out to Norwich City this past season, but was criticised harshly by the fans of the Canaries.
It now remains to be seen whether he will be able to break into a very competitive Chelsea lineup, or whether he will be loaned out for another season. The 21-year-old has been highly rated for his passing abilities, and is expected to have a bright future ahead of him. But, more game time will be needed to realise his best form.
