With Barcelona’s sponsorship deal with Rakuten up at the end of the season, economic vice-president Eduard Romeu has his sights set on securing a more lucrative offer, which means any new contract would need to be worth over 55 million euros.

With the Blaugrana club looking to increase their revenues and turn their dire financial situation around, the front-of-shirt sponsorship has been identified as a key area where they could make some key improvements.

“We’re not looking at the current value but the pre-pandemic one,” Romeu told TV3. “Whoever wants their name to grace this shirt will need to pay.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Barcelona shareholders will have to decide whether to approve a credit of up to 1.5 billion euros to deal with Espai Barcelona, including an already approved loan from Goldman Sachs.

President Joan Laporta is also still ruminating on the CVC deal which the club initially rejected. Romeu confirmed that they both feel the door is open to the deal but on different terms.

Romeu also shared Laporta’s hope that Lionel Messi might have been prepared to play for free.
