Ben Chilwell will miss the 2022 World Cup, having sustained a hamstring injury in Chelsea’s match against Dinamo Zagreb. His absence has been confirmed by the club in an official statement, and he could be out of action until February as he recovers.
“Following the injury vs Dinamo, Ben has undergone a scan – results show that Ben has suffered a significant injury, he’s unfortunately expected to miss the World Cup”, Chelsea’s official website read.
Ben Chilwell’s hamstring injury delivers major blow to England squad
“Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible following my scan results. I’ll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support,” Ben Chilwell wrote on his social media accounts.
The left-back exited the field limping against Zagreb, and was seen on crutches. The scans showed that he suffered a tear, and will require rehabilitation for the next few months to get back to full fitness.
Alongside Chilwell, Reece James is also out injured but is facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup. The right-back has spoken positively about his intentions, and could still make the England squad, unlike his teammate.
