Belgium vs Sweden abandoned at half time after 2 shot dead prior to kickoff in Brussels

The Belgium vs Sweden UEFA Euro Qualifier was abandoned at half time, after two Swedes were shot dead outside the stadium. They were wearing Sweden shirts, and the gunman reportedly fled the scene wearing an orange fluorescent jacket.

The terrorist alert has been raised to the highest level in Brussels after the shooting prior to the game. The terrorist alert has also been set high in other areas of the country after the incident. Fans in attendance were asked not to leave the stadium for security reasons, and were eventually discharged.

The players went out for the first half, and were level at 1-1 when the half time whistle blew. Viktor Gyokeres scored the opening goal for his side before Romelu Lukaku equalised through a penalty. The Sweden players learned about the incident at the break, and decided against coming out and playing the second half.

As of Tuesday morning, a man has been arrested with claims reportedly stating that he shouted “Allahu Akbar” and was travelling on a moped. The man confirmed in a video that he was from the Islamic State, the organised terror group.

Belgium have already qualified for the Euros next year, while Sweden don’t have the chance to make it anymore. As a result, the players asked for the match to not be continued out of respect for the affected families.
