It’s a clash of two proud footballing nations making their first-ever [World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA)Cup meeting — and it couldn’t come at a higher-stakes moment. Belgium topped Group G with authority. Senegal scraped through as a third-place qualifier after a rocky start. On paper, the Red Devils look the safer bet. But Sadio Mané and co. have a habit of proving paper wrong.

## Team Form & Preview

**Belgium** arrive as Group G winners with five points — one win, two draws — and an impressive 6 goals scored against just 2 conceded. A thumping 5-1 win over New Zealand showed their firepower. Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne remain the dangermen, with Zeno Debast a doubt through injury.

**Senegal** had a turbulent group stage — losing 3-1 to France and 3-2 to Norway before demolishing Iraq 5-0 to sneak through as one of the best third-placed sides. Currently ranked 18th in the FIFA rankings, just eight places below Belgium, Senegal’s squad is built around Sadio Mané and a host of elite-level European-based players including Kalidou Koulibaly, and striker Nicolas Jackson. Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy is also a major injury concern ahead of this tie.

> This is Senegal’s fourth appearance at a World Cup. On their debut in 2002, they reached the quarter-finals — and current head coach Pape Thiaw was part of that very squad as a player.

## Predicted Lineups

**Belgium (3-4-3)** Casteels | Faes, Vertonghen, Theate | Castagne, Onana, De Bruyne, Tielemans | Doku, Lukaku, De Ketelaere

**Senegal (4-3-3)** Gomis | Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs | Gueye, Ciss, Kouyaté | Diatta, Mané, Jackson

*Note: Debast (Belgium) and Mendy (Senegal) are injury doubts.*

## Prediction

Belgium’s defensive solidity and greater tournament experience give them the edge. But Senegal’s pace on the counter — especially through Mané and Jackson — makes this far from a comfortable night for the Red Devils. Expect a tight, physical contest. NBC Sports predicts Senegal to pull off a 2-1 upset, but we lean slightly differently here.

**Our Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Senegal**
