Belgium have been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup at the group stages. The Red Devils needed a win against Croatia in their final game to make it through to the knockout stages. But, they played out a 0-0 draw against the 2018 finalists, which wasn’t enough to see them through.
Morocco were able to defeat Canada 2-1 in their group, which helped them earn qualification to the last 16 as the winners of the group. A heroic display from the African side helped them win the group, despite being one of the underdogs.
Belgium fail to beat Croatia as World Cup hopes evaporate
Croatia thought they had a penalty 15 minutes into the game, after Yannick Carrasco fouled Kramaric. However, VAR overturned it for being offside by the slightest of margins.
Romelu Lukaku was subbed on in the second half, but failed to provide the goal that Belgium needed so badly. The Inter Milan striker had four great chances to score, with two tap-in opportunities. However, he could not find the back of the net on any occasion.
Following their exit, Roberto Martinez has resigned as the head coach of the Belgian national team – seemingly ending the era of their golden generation.
