In the aftermath of the tragic stampede that unfolded outside Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated a decisive step to prevent such calamities in the future. The cricket board has constituted a special committee entrusted with drafting comprehensive guidelines aimed at ensuring crowd safety during major sporting celebrations.

This proactive move follows the horrifying incident that claimed the lives of 11 passionate cricket fans who had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic maiden IPL title victory. The tragedy, which sent shockwaves across the country, has compelled Indian cricket’s governing body to prioritize public safety alongside the sport’s growing popularity.

Special Committee Formed with Senior BCCI Officials

The newly formed committee comprises three of the BCCI’s top-ranking administrators—Secretary Devajit Saikia, Vice-President Rajiv Shukla, and Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia. These senior officials have been assigned the crucial responsibility of preparing safety protocols to manage large crowds during cricket-related festivities.

The BCCI has set a deadline of 15 days for the committee to submit its recommendations. These guidelines are expected to cover aspects such as crowd management strategies, coordination with local civic bodies, mandatory permissions, emergency response plans, and accountability frameworks for event organizers.

Silence from BCCI Draws Criticism

Despite taking corrective measures now, the BCCI has come under scrutiny for its silence in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The organization did not release any official statement addressing the tragedy that unfolded on June 4, when thousands gathered to catch a glimpse of their victorious RCB players during a celebratory parade..

The lack of communication from India’s cricket board fueled public criticism, especially considering the growing commercialization of the Indian Premier League and its deep-rooted connection with fans nationwide.

Legal Actions and Political Intervention in Bengaluru

While the BCCI was yet to break its silence, local authorities in Bengaluru were quick to act. Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered a thorough investigation into the events that led to the chaos. He directed the Bengaluru police to arrest officials linked to the organization of the event, which included representatives from Royal Challengers Bengaluru and event management partner DNA Entertainment.

Subsequently, police detained Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s head of marketing and revenue, along with two officials from DNA Entertainment. Although all three were granted bail on June 13, the incident highlighted glaring lapses in planning and security arrangements.

Resignations Rock Karnataka State Cricket Association

In a significant development following the tragedy, two senior officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) tendered their resignations, citing moral accountability. Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam stepped down, acknowledging their roles in the events that culminated in the deadly stampede.

Their departure underscored the deep sense of responsibility felt by local cricket administrators and pointed to systemic failures in coordination between cricket associations, local authorities, and private event organizers.
