The BCCI recently announced the new selection committee, where Chetan Sharma will continue as the chairman. The new selectors will be picking the squad for India vs New Zealand series for the first time after T20 World Cup 2021. The team for this series will be announced next week but superstar players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli won’t be included in the team.

“That was the plan. That is why we finished the process this week. Chetan and his team will pick the squad for the New Zealand series. The ODI squad won’t change much from the Sri Lanka series. But it is up to the selectors to experiment with the T20 squad,” a BCCI official said

  • Sridharan Sharath

After India’s humiliating elimination from the T20 World Cup, BCCI fired Chetan Sharma as the chairman of the All India Selection Committee on November 18. In December 2020, he was named the Chief Selector and after his release, BCCI specified the eligibility criteria for the National Selectors. In these two years, he has to make some tough calls like dropping the senior players from the T20 team.

The BCCI will be looking forward to having a squad with younger talents. The rebuilding will happen under Hardik Pandya. A core team for the T20s will be formed. The most experienced player in the squad is Hardik Pandya who played a total of 84 T20s.

Five big decisions that the New Selection Committee will take

  1. Hardik Pandya as a T20 skipper– Hardik Pandya hasn’t been made the skipper of the T20s officially but if it happens, for the very first time, Indian cricket will have split Captaincy. Rohit Sharma will be leading from the Test and ODI front and Pandya will be guiding in the shortest format.
  2. Phasing out senior players from the T20 squad– The team has too many players above 30 like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammad Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The committee will focus to bring in young blood.
  3.  Shortlisting players for T20 World Cup 2024: The T20 World Cup coming up in 2024 is very significant and the committee will be making a shortlist of 20-25 players for the T20 World Cup 2024.
  4. Captaincy Succession in ODI and T20s– Rohit Sharma is currently the ODI and Test captain but there’s a big question on the captaincy in these two formats after he’s 35. Hardik Pandya is the probable choice for ODIS, but the committee has to choose between Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul for Test.
  5. Rahul Dravid’s future as a coach: Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends after the 2023 World Cup. After India’s humiliating loss against England, many eyebrows have been raised against him. If the team underperforms under him in the 2023 World Cup, his exit will be confirmed as a coach.
