Spanish publication AS announced on Wednesday that Real Madrid were planning on reuniting the famous trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale once again at Real Madrid next season. The headline of the recent edition of the magazine showed the front three during their days together at Madrid with the headline “back to the future”.
Benzema has remained at Madrid, and will continue to do so seemingly until he retires. He is the second highest scorer in LaLiga and has been as consistent as ever, emerging as the most important offensive player for Los Blancos over the last three seasons.
Speaking on his future during a press conference for the Wales national team, Gareth Bale talked about his desire of returning to Real Madrid at the end of the season:
‘The main reason I came to Spurs this year was that I wanted to play football first and foremost, but going into Euro 2020 I wanted to be match fit,’ Bale said.
‘The original plan was only to do a season at Spurs and then after the Euros I still have a year left at Real Madrid. My plan is obviously to go back and that’s as far as I’ve planned.
‘I always think when things aren’t going too well at your club it’s nice to get away,’ Bale added. ‘Especially mentally, it can definitely be a benefit to get away from the club environment.
‘The thing we have to do now is focus on these couple games for Wales, which are very important for us. We forget club life and concentrate on this.’
The only missing piece is Cristiano Ronaldo, especially since his situation at Juventus is so unclear. The player is reportedly open to the idea of returning to Spain, but Madrid are yet to try and sign their former player. Juventus do not want to keep any player that does not want to stay, but Ronaldo seemingly does not fall into that category since he is focused on doing his best for the Bianconeri.
Should the trio reunite, though, they could be an alternative for the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland who have both been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital.
