Bayern Munich and head coach Thomas Tuchel have confirmed that Jerome Boateng will not be returning to the club. The centre-back had been training with the first team following injuries to all four senior central defenders – Matthijs De Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min Jae and Tarek Buchmann.

The staff and board were quite impressed with the performance the veteran put in while in training. And subsequently, they decided to offer him a short first team contract to cope with their injury crisis at a time when the transfer window is shut. However, criticism from a multitude of sources has caused the club to change their mind and publicly release a statement confirming that Boateng will not play for them again.

Jerome Boateng will not return to Bayern Munich

“Jérôme Boateng will not be returning to the FC Bayern Munich squad. The club made this decision on Friday and informed the long-serving former Bayern player,” the official statement on the club’s website read.

“In light of all aspects, Bayern has now decided not to sign Boateng. At the same time, as a distinguished former player, he has been offered the chance to continue to maintain his fitness at the club. Boateng has presented himself in good physical condition.”

The defender was charged with assaulting his former girlfriend and mother of his two children while on holiday. The court found Boateng guilty of the charges and fined him €1.8 million, which was eventually reduced following an appeal. There have been further developments in the case, after the player left Lyon at the end of a two-year spell.

But now that Upamecano and MinJae are fit, the Bavarians will not be signing him as they have two starting options to field.
