Bayern Munich will not trigger Joao Cancelo’s £62 million buy option

Bayern Munich are unlikely to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent deal in the summer, as things stand. The player left Manchester City during the January transfer window in a shocking move, joining the Bavarian giants on a loan deal until the end of the season.

However, even though he had a bright start to life under Julian Nagelsmann, things have turned sour for him in the subsequent games. Since the defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach, he has fallen down the pecking order and is seen as unsuitable to the system that Nagelsmann is playing at the club.

Joao Cancelo loan deal will not be made permanent by Bayern

The buy option included in his loan deal is valued at £62 million, which is a hefty price tag for a defender. And considering that he isn’t playing every single game, Bayern are not willing to invest that kind of money on a player who isn’t the first choice for their head coach.

🚨 Bayern Munich have already decided they should send João Cancelo back to Manchester City after his loan finishes, rather than make it a permanent transfer.

The situation is frustrating for Joao Cancelo, who left Manchester City in search of regular game time. This was confirmed by Pep Guardiola when he was asked about one of their best defenders leaving the club.

Last night, the Portuguese full-back was able to provide another assist as Bayern Munich sealed passage into the last eight of the Champions League by defeating PSG 2-0 in the second leg of their Round of 16 clash.

Chelsea and Real Madrid have been linked with a permanent transfer for Cancelo this summer. But as things stand, there is nothing concrete in the works for him.
