Bayern Munich vs Schalke 8-0: Match review and the records

  • Thomas Muller scored his 200th goal for Bayern.
  • Bayern have set the record for most goals scored in an opening day match with 8.
  • 8-0 is the worst result in Schalke history since 1966/67. Gladbach put 11 past them to no response.
  • Jamal Musiala became the youngest goalscorer in Bayern’s history at 17 years old.
  • The last time Bayern lost a competitive match was against Borussia Monchengladbach, on the 7th of December 2019 in a 2-1 away defeat.
  • Bayern have not lost a single match in 2020. Not one.

Bayern’s side of the tale

While Barcelona still managed to have two to their name during their 8-2 humiliation in the Champions League last season, Schalke 04 had worse luck than the Catalans.

Bayern started the season against Schalke in an even more humiliating 8-0 defeat, with Serge Gnabry netting a hat-trick on the opening day of the season.

Lewandowski found the back of the net following a penalty in the 31st minute. However, his goal was not the highlight of the match.

Reversing roles for the night, Lewandowski assisted Muller in the most cheeky fashion possible. The Polish striker chipped a rabona directly onto the left foot of Thomas Muller, who drove it past Ralf Fahrmann.

We might have had the assist of the season on the very first day itself.

Elsewhere on the attacking front, Leroy Sane made his debut for Bayern Munich. After missing out completely on the 19/20 campaign following an ACL injury in the Community Shield against Liverpool, the former Schalke man spent the entirety of the season on the sidelines before making the move back to Germany. Only this time, he joined the biggest club in the country.

Sane looked spectacular on the field, and it was as if he hadn’t missed a day of football. Assisting two of Gnabry’s three, Sane scored his debut goal in the 71st minute. He was assisted by Bayern’s new no. 6, Joshua Kimmich who had an excellent night in midfield.

Schalke’s side of the tale

Schalke have been put to shame on the very first day of the season. While nobody truly gave them any chance of winning against the defending champions, 8-0 was a shocker.

Though it remains to be seen how the board reacts to this defeat, it is safe to say that David Wagner’s job is in danger.

In stark comparison to Bayern, the last time Schalke won a match was against Borussia Monchengladbach at the turn of the year. They haven’t won a match in 2020 since then and it might be a matter of time before the board decides to make changes to the club.
