Bayern Munich have reached an agreement to sign Joao Cancelo from Manchester City on loan. The defender will be joining on a temporary deal with the option to make it permanent for €70 million down the line.
Medical tests for the move will take place later tonight, upon which, he will be officially announced as a new player for the Bundesliga champions.
Bayern Munich to sign Joao Cancelo on a loan deal
The bid to sign Cancelo has materialised out of seemingly nowhere. Noussair Mazraoui is currently injured, and Benjamin Pavard could leave in the summer with Barcelona interested in signing him.
There are concerns about whether City will have enough cover in the squad in case they can’t sign a replacement. However, with the emergence of Rico Lewis and Sergio Gomez, as well as Nathan Ake’s good form, they can have back-up for the remainder of the season.
Joao Cancelo was one of the best players for the club last season. His attacking output was very important as they won the Premier League title. However, things haven’t gone according to plan this year. He has started only three of their last ten games and hasn’t played as much.
Cancelo’s relationship with Pep Guardiola has deteriorated as well, and this has resulted in him asking to leave. The player was labelled disruptive after speaking out about his lack of game time. And City have allowed him to leave to prevent things from getting any worse.
