Julian Nagelsmann lifted his first trophy as the manager of Bayern Munich by defeating Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup.
The Bundesliga winners defeated their rivals in the first Der Klassiker of the season at the Westfalenstadion, with the scoreline reading 3-1 at full-time. Robert Lewandowski scored a brace against his former team, and became the highest scorer in the competition while Thomas Muller also got onto the scoresheet, with him second in the list of all-time goalscorers in the Super Cup.
The match was extremely fast, and the first half was full of quick turnovers. Both teams gave away possession easily, and attacks were launched very quickly. Youssufa Moukoko had a great chance to score for Dortmund, but was flagged offside. Bayern Munich also squandered several opportunities in front of goal prior to Lewandowski’s opener.
The Polish striker was unmarked before half time, and his late arrival into the box allowed him to bury the cross into the bottom corner. Bayern doubled their lead after half time, with Lewandowski’s dummy being tapped in by Thomas Muller. Marco Reus managed to get Dortmund back into the game shortly after, with a fantastic goal from outside the box.
Matters became heated during the game, with several heated confrontations between the two sets of players breaking out. Dortmund managed to find some momentum after their breakthrough, as the players urged the crowd to cheer for them.
However, a mistake in defense from Manuel Akanji allowed Lewandowski to pounce and score the third goal of the game. Despite creating chances, Dortmund were unable to take them and were defeated at full-time as Bayern lifted their first trophy of the season.
