Villarreal have defeated Bayern Munich in their quarter final, and have knocked the German giants out of the Champions League. The return leg at the Allianz Arena ended as a 1-1 draw, but Villarreal’s 1-0 win at home helped them proceed into the semifinals of the competition.
They will face either Benfica or Liverpool in the penultimate round of the Champions League. The Bavarians were the favourites against the Yellow Submarine, but after their Round of 16 win against Juventus in the competition, the Europa League winners have defeated the record Bundesliga champions as well.
Villarreal defeat Bayern Munich in stunning display
The display in Germany sees Villarreal return to the last four of the Champions League for the first time since 2006. They had been widely underrated this season, but have shown their quality time and time again, and are the underdogs this year. Unai Emery himself has made it to the semifinals for the first time in his managerial career.
Robert Lewandowski put his side back into the tie with a goal shortly after half-time, and late drama helped the Spanish side pull through. Samuel Chukwueze stepped off the bench to net the winner for Villarreal in the 88th minute, as the away fans went ballistic.
Villarreal have only had two shots on target over their two legs, and both of those shots have resulted in goals. Their resolute defensive performance has helped nullify Bayern’s goalscoring threat, and has earned them one of their most historic wins of all-time.
