Bayern, BVB & Co: The Best Football Clubs in Germany

Many people know, Germans are bad at making jokes, have a stiff lifestyle and live in small, boring country houses. But this is not the only thing we know about the middle European country with its forests, mountains and autobahns. Despite those negative prejudices, Germany is well known for being the best in certain things, such as engineering, building cars and producing beer. The one thing the Germans are especially good at is football.

During the grey and lonely times of the last year, with all its restrictions and lockdowns, many fans have missed going to the stadium, watching matches with friends in the pub or spending excited times in a betting venue between drinks and cigarettes. As almost all countries had to close their bars, restaurants, sports events and shops in order to tackle the virus, many have turned to the internet in order to watch games and find entertainment. For those who like gambling and betting on sports events, pages like bet365 offer everything you need.

As also sports events like the European Championship had to be delayed due to the coronavirus, people stormed the stadiums as soon as they reopened, celebrating a surprising and exciting tournament one year later. Also here in India an exciting season is coming. Even if Germany was not able to perform at its best during the EURO 2020, the German football clubs are not unknown to a wide part of the society. Why? Because they are good! In Germany football is the national sport and The German Football Association builds the sport’s national governing body, has 6.6 million members, which is roughly eight percent of the population and is organized in over 26,000 football clubs. So with so many clubs around, the question arises, which are the best football clubs in Germany? We have the infos you need to know!

FC BAYERN MUNICH

One of the most popular German football clubs is FC Bayern from the capital of Bavaria, Munich. Fifty-six years ago, the club was not even invited to be part of the newly created Bundesliga, and yet in the space of just over half a century Bayern Munich have emerged from relative obscurity to become the best-supported club in world football.

Bayern are by far and away the most successful club in Germany, with a staggering total of 29 league titles, 19 DFB Cups and five UEFA Champions League crowns, as well as a clutch of other domestic and continental trophies. But what makes them stand out from the other giants of the game – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United – is the sheer enormity of their fan base. The Bavarian club hosts no fewer than 290,000 official club members, which puts them over 100,000 clear of fellow European heavyweights Benfica and Barca.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Another great club is the BVB. The club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia is best known for its men’s professional football team, which plays in the Bundesliga. The club have won eight league championships, five DFB-Pokals, one UEFA Champions League, one Intercontinental Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. With the exception of fans of their long-standing rivals Schalke, Borussia Dortmund are one of a select few clubs worldwide that are seemingly universally liked and respected.

SV WERDER BREMEN

An amazing club is also the northern german Sportverein Werder Bremen founded in 1899. The team is best known for their professional football team, who will be competing in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of the German football league system, as of the 2021–22 season. Werder share the record for most seasons played in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, and are third in the all-time Bundesliga table, behind Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.
