Bayer Leverkusen picked up a huge 3-0 win over Bayern Munich to establish a five-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga table. The Werkself’s full backs scored all three goals, with Josip Stanisic opening the scoring against his former club in the first half.
Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala were neutralised in the game, with the two attackers barely found by their teammates in the first half. Leverkusen were set up in such a way that it was very difficult for Bayern players to find each other in the attacking third. And in the process, they were barely able to conjure any meaningful chances.
Bayer Leverkusen defeat Bayern Munich 3-0 in title clash
Leverkusen opened up Bayern a number of times on the counter attack, but were unable to make those chances count because of Manuel Neuer in goal. Stanisic’s goal, however, showed the problem, with the team switching off when the corner was taken, allowing the right-back to tap in.
The second half didn’t offer much respite for the visitors, as Leverkusen remained on the front foot. Alex Grimaldo doubled their lead shortly into the second half, piling the pressure onto Thomas Tuchel’s men. The assist from Tella was key, finding the left-back in the box to complete the one-two.
Nathan Tella in particular had a number of chances on the counter, but his finishing was not up to the mark to beat Neuer. The same can be said for Frimpong, who came off the bench, but eventually got his goal after a corner at the other end, with Neuer going up and leaving an open goal.
The defender scored from distance, leaving the last man, Leroy Sane, no chance.
Xabi Alonso’s men remain unbeaten in the league, and now have a significant advantage in the title race. And while a five point advantage against Bayern Munich doesn’t feel like much, they still have a lead, and given that they are unbeaten, they could extend it even further if they can keep it up.
