If it wasn’t as clear as the light of the day before, it is now. Barcelona’s current President Josep Maria Bartomeu is under further pressure to resign from his post after 90% of a census voted no-confidence against the President.

Més que una Moció has launched about two weeks ago. While planning began months ago, the ultras have until the end of the day to collect the required 16,521 signatures needed to force an election.

As of Wednesday afternoon, about 90% of the votes had been collected. Here is where things get difficult. The motion is offline.

In other words, members have to be physically present in Catalunya to register and sign the petition, or overseas where it can be signed.

Once the required amount of signatures is collected, the Barcelona board will be forced to hold elections soon. Should that take place, 66% of the voters must be against the President to remove him from his post immediately.

The club’s response

Barcelona has not made any public comment about the petition. In addition, coverage by the Catalan media is also at a minimum. No fans are allowed to watch any games as of now. Hence, the organisers are having to put in double the effort to secure signatures.

Most of the fans of the club have been very vocal about their desire to see Bartomeu removed. There have been rallies and riots around Camp Nou calling for his resignation as well.

Things went from bad to worse for Bartomeu when Messi handed in a transfer request earlier this year. While the Argentine legend extended his stay at the club, fans will not forget the scare of watching their best player ever depart.

Even if the petition does not go through, it is a matter of when and not if Bartomeu resigns. The pressure has never been higher on the board.
