Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has come under enormous amounts of scrutiny as of recently. The current president has been responsible for being the man in charge of one of the most tumultuous eras of the Catalonian club.Â
Everything from his recruitment strategies to the club’s finances has been heavily criticised by fans. To make things worse, the 16,250 signatures required for a no-confidence vote against Bartomeu have been collected and the official number is around the 20,000 mark.Â
Following a meeting held by the Barcelona board yesterday, Bartomeu had the chance to resign as President following the no-confidence vote forced by the fans. However, he decided against letting go of his post without a fight.Â
Bartomeu will now be contesting the Barcelona presidential elections for the next term to determine whether he will be continuing.
Previously, reports stated that the elections were to be conducted on the 1st and 2nd of November. However, it now appears that those dates will be pushed behind due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In any case, Bartomeu’s term as President is scheduled to end next March. The fans have had enough of their current man in charge and firmly believe that there needs to be a change at Camp Nou, and fast.Â
That is the reason why the supporters have been trying to force an early election to remove Bartomeu from power as soon as possible.
After horrendous exits from the Champions League in the seasons gone by, questionable managerial appointments and spending an excess of €100 million in almost every transfer window only for the gamble to not pay off, Bartomeu has made some critical errors during his second reign as President.
The breaking point for many fans had been Messi’s desire to leave the club after spending over two decades as a Blaugrana.
With the current state of the Catalonian club, it appears to be a question of “when” and not “if” for Josep Maria Bartomeu’s removal as Barcelona president.Â
