Barcelona youngster Pedri has been given the 2021 Golden Boy award for his outstanding performance this past season. The midfielder made 53 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, which is the most of any player in the squad.

He was chosen in Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for Euro 2020, and played all but one minute of their campaign. He finished without a goal or assist in all appearances, but was very influential throughout. As a result, he was named the ‘Young Player of the Tournament’.

“I thank Tuttosport for this trophy which makes me proud. Thanks also to all the members of the jury and the fans who have always supported me in this simply incredible 2021 for me,” Pedri said after being named the Golden Boy.

“And of course, many thanks to Barça, the national team, my family, my friends and obviously to all those who have been close to me day after day without whom I would not have been able to win the Golden Boy.”

He becomes only the second Barcelona player to win the award after Lionel Messi. The youngster won with 318 votes, and the only other player close to him was Jude Bellingham with 119 votes. Never before has such a big gap been observed in the Golden Boy awards.
