The last time Toni Freixa contested the Barcelona Presidential elections in 2015, he finished at the bottom of the list with only 1,750 votes which amounted to 3.7% of the total votes cast. However, the lawyer has plans to turn things around this time, and Freixa’s plans involve signing three-star players to help the team on the pitch.
“We have closed an agreement with an investor who will contribute 250 million for Barça.
“For the 2021-22 season, we will be able to sign three stars, two in attack and one in defence.
“We have talked about the possibility of securing the signings for next season. Barça will have the competitive team that it has to have and that now it does not have. Everything will be a consequence of work. It is impossible that Koeman does not like them, they are unique players.”
Considering the €1.173 billion debt that Barcelona currently has on their books, a further investment of €250 million is not the best way to sort things out, since the club is currently in a dire financial crisis.
Here is what Victor Font, another Presidential candidate, had to say about Barcelona’s crippling debt:
“Barça, economically, is a train that goes at 200 km/h against a wall. If we do nothing, we can put the club’s ownership model at risk,”
And it is hard to disagree with Font given that the club has been struggling to pay the salaries of its players in recent times as well.
The last, and the favorite candidate to win the election, Joan Laporta has proposed the dicey solution of having debt bonds to help the economic side of things in Barcelona. The election is just a fortnight away, and solutions must come quickly no matter what they turn out to be.
