Barcelona’s transfer history in recent years has not been the most impressive, with hundreds of millions spent on players that have gone on to not fit into the system.

Some of the notable examples include Miralem Pjanic and Philippe Coutinho, who have failed to make it into the first team and have been linked with a move away. However, on the flipside, Barcelona made the wisest investment in recent years by agreeing a deal with Segunda Division club Las Palmas for Pedri.

The youngster went on to be one of the most important players under Ronald Koeman last season. He was the star of the Spain squad in Euro 2020, and also applied his talents to the Spanish Olympics team, and won a silver medal by making it into the finals of the tournament.

Pedri played 73 games in the 2020-21 season, the last of which was eight days ago.

Las Palmas have currently received €11 million for the player, and the final amount could rise to €23 million once all bonuses are activated. They are also entitled to a 15% sell-on fee if the player decides to leave Camp Nou in the future.

According to the deal they struck with Pedri’s former club, Barcelona could have to pay €5 million more very soon. Pedri has currently played 45 games, with total game time over 45 minutes. Once the player reaches 50 such games, Barcelona will be obliged to pay the bonus to Palmas.

Pedri was the standout youngster at the Euros, and his tireless efforts for club and country make him one of the best young midfielders in the world right now.
