Ronald Araujo sustained an injury with Uruguay while on international duty, which will see him miss two to three months of action, including the FIFA World Cup that will be played in Qatar in November.

The Uruguayan is one of five Barcelona players to have sustained an injury during the international break. Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde are the others on the list to have been ruled out for the coming weeks.

As part of a new rule to protect clubs that have their players injured during the international break, FIFA will compensate Barcelona until Ronald Araujo is given the green light to return to injury. The board will pay €20,458 every day to the La Liga side as a result.

“After consulting with several doctors, we decided that the best thing to do was to undergo surgery. It’s not about choosing one team [Barça] or the other [Uruguay], it’s about my health and getting back as soon as possible,” Araujo wrote in a statement, confirming his decision to undergo surgery.

According to the ruling, FIFA will pay for the other players that sustained injuries during the international break, with their national teams, as well.
