The summer transfer window may have shut only 5 days ago, but since the winter transfer window opens in only 83 days on January 1st, the transfer updates have seemingly never stopped coming.
Among the many stories that were circulating during the summer transfer window, the Memphis Depay transfer to Barcelona was a particularly strong and realistic one.
That was mainly because Lyon’s president Jean-Michel Aulas had seemingly caved in and confirmed that personal terms between Memphis and Barcelona had been confirmed.
The transfer did not happen during the transfer window gone by, because Barcelona were unable to raise funds to prize the attacker away from France.
Jean-Michel Aulas stated publicly that Memphis was disappointed at Barcelona due to their failure of following through with their promise of financially persuading Lyon to sell the Dutch international to the Spanish giants in an attempt to add depth to the squad.
From the looks of the status quo, Memphis will surely join Barcelona in 83 days at the very least, when the winter transfer window is underway and clubs splash the cash once again.
Memphis has already scored 4 goals in 6 matches for Lyon this season and will be a brilliant addition if, or rather when he reunites with former international team manager Ronald Koeman at Camp Nou.
All that said, Barcelona still have huge names at the club to lead the attack in the form of Messi, Griezmann, Dembele and Coutinho. While the addition of Depay to the current squad could make Barcelona a bigger threat going forward, the current squad is not too bad either.
Despite the loss of star striker Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid earlier this year, Ronald Koeman’s team have coped well. Opting for a complete change in tactics, along with ditching the long-favoured 4-3-3, Barcelona are in a very sensitive place and will have to work hard every week to prove their doubters wrong and move past the horrors of previous seasons.
