Barcelona’s financial woes have received a lot of attention over the last few years. The Spanish giants have had to sell assets in the short-term to sign and register transfer targets, while also fixing their wage structure owing to the strict limits that LaLiga has placed on them.
The Catalonian club still owes a lot of money in the form of amortisation fees – a total of over €200 million to be specific. The club still owes $25m to Leeds for Raphinha, $14m to Man City for Ferran Torres and $11m to Bayern for Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona also owe fellow Spanish side Sevilla $38m for Jules Kounde.
Barcelona debts pile up to over €200 million over the coming year
With very few assets available to sell from the first team, and no more levers to pull, Barcelona find themselves in a tricky situation once again. They will have to count on the revenue generated from tickets, TV revenue and match prize money to repay their debts.
This season, they have tried to avoid paying a premium to sign players for the most part. While Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu and Inigo Martinez have joined on a free transfer, Joao Cancelo and Felix have joined on loan deals.
They have agreed a €40 million deal for Vitor Roque, which will add to their expenses, but they have facilitated the exits of Ousmane Dembele and Franck Kessie and are also expecting a payout from the departure of Francisco Trincao to ease the financial burden.
