Barcelona have left Dani Alves out of their squad for the Europa League this season. The Blaugrana only had the chance to include three winter signings, and they have decided to go with Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traore.
The Brazilian will be a part of their La Liga squad for the remainder of the season, but won’t be able to feature in European competitions. He was their first winter signing, and returned to the club as a free agent, after terminating his contract with Sao Paulo.
Dani Alves left out of Barcelona’s Europa League squad
Barcelona’s hopes of remaining in the Champions League came to a stop in their final group stage game. They lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich in their final game to finish third behind Benfica and drop down to the second tier of European football.
Xavi’s team will be facing off against Napoli over two legs later this month. They will have to win the playoffs on aggregate to move on to the next round, or they will risk missing out on the only piece of silverware they can still win.
The team is currently fifth in La Liga, 15 points behind arch rivals and league leaders Real Madrid. They exited the Copa del Rey recently against Athletic Bilbao, who are up against Los Blancos in the quarter finals. As a result, Barcelona might go without a single trophy this year, as a result of their decline.
