Barcelona has sacked Ronald Koeman after the 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. The Blaugrana lost their second match on the spin after El Clasico. They are currently ninth in the table, and Joan Laporta himself took the decision after the defeat.
Under Koeman, Barcelona suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in El Clasico. The calls to sack the Dutchman intensified thereafter. Last night’s defeat to Vallecano was the final straw that made Laporta pull the trigger.
Last season, he managed to win the Copa del Rey with Barcelona. But, his defeatist attitude in press conferences and points dropped have caused his dismissal. Mismanagement of the team is also one of the reasons why Koeman had started to become unpopular amongst fans.
Here is what Barcelona said in their official statement:
“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.
FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”
Club legend Xavi is on the list to potentially replace Koeman. Barcelona are looking for replacements right away, and their former midfielder is the favourite to land the job. Belgium national team coach Roberto Martinez is also one of the possible names to replace the Dutchman.
