Barcelona headed for financial crisis amidst potential 22/23 UCL exit

Despite being able to revive their financial condition to buy a new squad for the season, Barcelona have found themselves in a familiar situation again. They are on the verge of being eliminated from the 2022/23 Champions League following their draw against Inter Milan.

The Nerazzurri only need to win one of their games against Bayern Munich or Viktoria Plzen to seal qualification into the knockout stages. And this would spell a lot of trouble for Barcelona, especially if they can’t beat Bayern Munich.

Barcelona could be set for another financial crisis

Progression into the quarter finals of the Champions League was one of the main objectives of the season for Xavi. But with recent results, it seems like they might be set for Europa League football again.

And this would significantly damage their finances, and their project. Barcelona still owe money for the transfers of Philippe Coutinho, Miralem Pjanic and Neto. And neither of them play for the club anymore.

Barcelona have also invested money in rebuilding Camp Nou, and are also paying money to Sixth Street for TV rights. They also sanctioned a lot of transfers this summer, and might have to prepare for another financial crisis if the massive revenue generated from the Champions League is removed.

Club president Joan Laporta had said that he was anticipating a profit for the 22/23 season. And while it might still be the case with the team first in La Liga, the margin might be cut down if they exit the top tier of Europe.
