Liverpool turned a few heads with their recent signing of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is keen on reuniting with his former Dutch players in Memphis Depay and Gini Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum has been closely linked with a move to the Nou Camp all summer. There were reports that Liverpool would first sell Wijnaldum before turning towards the recruitment of Thiago.

However, that transfer triangle has been knocked out of its wits. According to a recent development reported by the Mirror, Koeman might not be able to land either one of his former Dutch international players.

The reason behind it has been cited as the strict financial restrictions imposed on the La Liga clubs by the league.

After spending over hundreds of millions in each and every transfer window in the seasons before, Barcelona are now under tremendous financial pressure.

One of the most staggering figures quoted by the Mirror is a wage bill of £510 million per year.

The Catalonian’s plans of buying both Depay and Wijnaldum could be scrapped following the league’s decision. The La Liga authorities have prohibited Barcelona from signing any new players until they raise funds via player sales.

Ronald Koeman has hinted towards that very fact in press conferences held recently. In addition, Barcelona will have to let go of some big names to be able to fund the transfers.

This is because they won’t be receiving a lot of money from the sales of Ivan Rakitic and Vidal, both of whom are in the twilight of their career and have few years left to give to the game.

While the 29-year-old midfielder could have made a difference to the team, it seems like plans of Wijnaldum moving to Spain are more likely not to go through at the moment.

All that said, the transfer window is open until October and Barcelona could manage to surprise us all.
