Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to bring their Clasico-winning streak to a screeching halt. Here are the three talking points from the game.
Madrid punished without Benzema and Mendy
Both Frenchman were missed in the game, as they missed out due to injury. Fede Valverde was deployed as the False 9, while Nacho slotted in left-back. Despite Valverde’s versatility, he was unable to provide direction to the attack for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
The 34-year-old’s contributions were brought to the forefront in his absence, and without their star number 9, Real Madrid were not able to create enough, and test ter Stegen enough either.
Barcelona extend La Liga winning streak to five
One winning streak had to come to an end today, and it was the home team that took the fall. Their five-game winning streak in El Clasico has now been halted by Barcelona. Xavi’s men now have five consecutive wins in La Liga, and have become the best team in the division once again.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been in sensational form since joining from Arsenal, and his double helped the visitors pick up the win. The Gabon international also set up Ferran Torres for the third goal, piling the misery on their rivals.
Real Madrid remain at the top
Despite being defeated convincingly by Barcelona, Real Madrid remain at the top of the La Liga table. They have a nine-point lead over second-placed Valencia and look set to capture the league title for a 35th time in their history.
