Barcelona midfielder Nico is set to join Porto on a permanent deal, ending his association with the Blaugranes for the time being. Porto will pay a fee worth €8 million for the midfielder, and will have a buyback clause inserted in the deal to bring him back in the future.
The La Liga champions have also negotiated a 40% sell-on clause in the deal, meaning they will be entitled to almost half the transfer fee that Porto receive for him in the future. The 21-year-old will complete the medical for the move soon, upon which he will be revealed as a new signing for the Portuguese club.
Nico to sign for Porto in €8 million deal from Barcelona
The player had extended his contract with Barcelona till 2026 only last summer, which also saw the insertion of a release clause worth €500 million into the deal. But only a year later, he is departing for a small fraction of that clause.
This past season, the La Masia graduate was on loan at Valencia where he made 26 La Liga appearances, scoring and assisting once. He has also represented Spain at the U-21 level 8 times, but hasn’t been called up to the senior team yet.
With Xavi’s side signing Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu to bolster their midfield, it was unlikely that Nico would have had minutes with the first team this season. As a result, he is moving on to get regular playing time in a new league.
