Rain during the night caused the outfield to get soggy, which delayed the start of play on Friday. Kohli was going out to warm up before play began, while the ground crew were removing one of the covers. At this point, a member of the ground crew approached the star batter and touched his feet. Kohli attempted to downplay and recognize the staff member. After losing the opening Test match in Chennai, Kohli will be looking to win the Kanpur Test.

In Kanpur, India chose to field first after winning the toss. The visitors entered the game with their lineup unaltered, while Bangladesh made two changes: Taijul Islam and Khaled Ahmed replaced Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed.
