Bad Cop

Anurag Kashyap returns with a power-pack mystery thriller series that consumes blood-warming dialogues, the filmmaker has taken to Instagram on Thursday to post a mysterious statement saying that filmmaking isn’t getting him anywhere, so he’s going to start playing the bad guy. Hours later, the teaser for Nithilan Swaminathan’s vengeance saga Maharaja debuted, featuring the filmmaker in a gray role with Vijay Sethupathi. The teaser for another project with Anurag as the ‘bad guy’ has been revealed.

Bad Cop teaser

On Friday, Disney+ Hotstar released a teaser for its next Hotstar Specials murder thriller series, Bad Cop. The trailer depicts Anurag in a gangster-like avatar, holding a gun, smoking, and dancing with a wicked expression. We also see Gulshan Devaiah return as a cop after Dahaad and Duranga. His name is Karan, but he appears to have two personalities, with his darker side called Arjun, a reference to Rakesh Roshan’s 1995 blockbuster reincarnation story Karan Arjun, starring Shah Rukh Khan as Karan and Salman Khan as Arjun.

Bad Cop

Bad Cop, directed by Aditya Datt and adapted by Rensil D’Silva, stars Anurag Kashyap as the quirky, charming, and deadly villain Kazbe, and Gulshan Devaiah as Karan, a daunting and daring cop. Harleen Sethi, Saurabh Sachdeva, and Aishwarya Sushmita also play pivotal roles in the series.

Aradhana Bhola, Managing Director of Fremantle India, stated, “We are thrilled to kick off a new chapter in Fremantle India’s content development journey with our first drama web series, Bad Cop. To bring the Indian version of this format, originally conceived by RTL, to life for Disney+ Hotstar, we collaborated with the top talent across the board.

“Writer Rensil D’Silva reimagined the intriguing yet quirky world in an Indian setting; the rooted characters were brought to life by a talented ensemble cast led by Gulshan Devaiah, Harleen Sethi, Saurabh Sachdeva, and Anurag Kashyap under the able direction of Aditya Datt, who, above all, brought his mass action sensibilities to the series.”

“We hope that our excitement proves to be infectious with the audience loving Bad Cop as much as we have loved creating it,” Bhola stated.

Anurag and Gulshan have a long history, with the latter making his debut in the former’s 2010 directorial, The Girl In Yellow Boots, which also starred Anurag’s ex-wife, Kalki Koechlin, who introduced him to Gulshan.

This is not Anurag’s first time playing the ‘evil guy’ on screen. Prior to Bad Cop and Maharaja, he played the villain in Sonakshi Sinha’s 2016 action film Akira, Nayanthara’s 2018 Tamil action movie Imaikka Nodigal, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s ZEE5 crime drama Haddi last year. After Nawazuddin, Anurag will face off against Gulshan, another talent he introduced to Hindi cinema.

Bad Cop is directed by Aditya Datt, who previously worked with Gulshan on the 2019 action thriller Commando 3. Harleen Sethi, who was last seen in Sudip Sharma’s slow-burn thriller Kohrra on Netflix India last year, also appears in the series.

In addition to Bad Cop, Gulshan will be seen in Ulajh. Meanwhile, Anurag is preparing for the debut of his directorial film Kennedy, which stars Sunny Leone and Rahul Bhat. The actual release date for Bad Cop will be announced soon, along with a teaser.
