Baahubali has previously ventured into the realm of animation. In 2017, SS Rajamouli introduced a four-season animated series called Baahubali: The Lost Legends. This series was made available on Amazon Prime Video. The series was a collaborative effort between Graphic India and Arka Mediaworks, with Colours TV securing the television rights.
There were plans for a prequel series titled Baahubali: The Beginning, co-produced by Rajamouli, to be released on Netflix. However, this project was ultimately shelved. Initially, Mrunal Thakur was cast as Sivagami in the series, but she was later replaced by Wamiqa Gabi.
She told Filmy Gyan last year, “I was doing it (Baahubali). Directors kept changing. And I was still there training (in sword fight). I kept asking if the director has been finalised. I don’t know why they shut down the project, I hope it restarts again.”
In addition to the prequel novel “The Rise of Sivagami,” which debuted alongside “Chaturanga: Queen of Mahishmathi” and the graphic novel “Baahubali: Battle of the Bold,” 2017 also saw the adaptation of Baahubali into a Japanese manga by Akira Fukaya, renowned for works like “Hakobiya Ken” and “Tetsuo: The Bullet Man.”
Furthermore, a mobile game titled “Baahubali: The Game” was launched in 2017 by Moonfrog.
The Baahubali franchise has not only made waves in India but has also made a significant impact globally, including in Japan, China, and various European countries. Directed by SS Rajamouli, Baahubali 2 shattered numerous records upon its release, including becoming the second highest-grossing film in Indian box office history with an astonishing revenue of Rs. 1810 crores. Domestically, Baahubali 2 has claimed the top spot in terms of box office performance. Its release in 2017 marked a turning point in Indian cinema, establishing new standards for success.
Both Baahubali films boast an impressive ensemble cast featuring acclaimed actors such as Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj, and Nassar.
Rajamouli’s “RRR” Takes Broadway: Receives Standing Ovation in Japan
SS Rajamouli’s most recent directorial venture was “RRR,” which garnered widespread acclaim both in India and internationally. Starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, the film gained global recognition, with its song “Naatu Naatu” even winning the Oscar Award for Best Song in 2023.
SS Rajamouli, currently in Japan, shared a post revealing that the renowned Takarazuka company has adapted his blockbuster film “RRR” into a Broadway play. Through X (formerly Twitter), Rajamouli shared images and videos from the event as he attended the adaptation.
Rajamouli received a standing ovation in Japan. In the initial video, applause filled the theater as Rajamouli, with folded hands, expressed his gratitude and waved to the audience. On stage, the actors smiled, clapped, and greeted the crowd with folded hands. The second clip captured Rajamouli leaving the venue while people rose to their feet, giving him a standing ovation.
