Axel Tuanzebe is set to leave Manchester United this summer, when his contract expires. The central defender has spent five different loan spells away from the club, three of which came with Aston Villa. He also played for Napoli and Stoke City, but was unable to become a permanent player for any of the clubs.
The once “future captain” of Manchester United was part of the Europa League winning squad in 2017, as well as the one that finished as runners-up in 2021. However, he has only made 19 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils.
Axel Tuanzebe to leave Manchester United this summer
The defender’s loan spell at Napoli was plagued by injuries, and his most recent loan was with Stoke. There, too, opportunities were limited for him. The last of his five appearances came in March, and he hasn’t played since.
This summer, he will be looking for a new club since it is effectively over between him and United. Erik Ten Hag will be overseeing a mass clearout of the squad this summer and the 25-year-old will be a part of that.
Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are also expected to leave alongside Axel Tuanzebe, upon the expiry of their contracts. This will open up spaces for new players to sign for the club and help improve the quality of the squad.
