Arsenal took on Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday in the Wembley stadium, London. Frank Lampard’s men won their last competitive meeting with Arsenal. It was the 2019 Europa League final. Chelsea also reigned supreme in the Premier League, winning one and drawing the other match.
But Arsenal had a great record in the FA Cup. Chelsea and Arsenal were about to meet for the third time in a FA Cup final with Arsenal winning both the previous finals.
This time too, Mikel Arteta’s men kept the record intact. Pulisic scored the first goal of the match but Aubameyang scored two goals to help Arsenal come from behind and win the final. It was a record 14th FA Cup win for the Gunners. Aubameyang also won his first major trophy since winning the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang broke three records on Saturday:
1. Aubameyang became the first African man to ever captain a side in the FA Cup final.
2. Aubameyang is now the first Arsenal player to score twice in a Wembley FA Cup final since Reg Lewis against Liverpool in 1950.
3. Aubameyang, 31-year-old, has now become the oldest Gunners’ scorer in a cup final since Bob John netted against Newcastle in 1932.
Aubameyang has certainly inked his name in the Arsenal history book. It’s still not clear if the Gabon international will remain at Arsenal next season. But this silverware would definitely give the Arsenal squad more hope of fighting for all the titles next season. But even if Aubameyang decides to leave, he will definitely be remembered as a legend at Arsenal.
