Liverpool broke the hearts of AC Milan fans at the San Siro, defeating the Rossoneri 2-1. As a result, Liverpool have finished at the top of their group with a flawless record. On the other hand, Milan finish last in their group and are out of European competition altogether.
Fikayo Tomori gave the home team the lead in the game, but goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi turned things around for Jürgen Klopp’s men in due course. Having won the group, Liverpool will be facing one of the teams that finished second in their group, depending on their draw.
On the other side of the group, La Liga winners Atletico Madrid won a tense battle against Porto to qualify for the round of 16. Three red cards were shown in the game, with Yannick Carrasco sent off first for swimming an arm around Otavio’s neck.
Shortly after, Matheus Cunha goaded Porto centre back Wendell into contact. The defender was sent off as a result, with his teammate Augustin Marchesin following suit shortly after. Antoine Griezmann turned provider after scoring the opening goal, setting up Angel Correa for the second goal.
Rodrigo De Paul scored the third, while a late penalty for Porto could only provide one consolation goal for them. Porto finished the game with 9 men, while Atletico Madrid did so with 10. Carrasco will miss the first leg of their knockout stage game. Atletico Madrid’s win means that Porto have dropped down to the Europa League, and will be competing in the knockout stages there.
