Atletico Madrid are looking to sign Memphis Depay as the replacement for Joao Felix in the January transfer window.
Felix is set to leave the club on a loan deal to join Chelsea for the rest of the season. And the Rojiblancos have identified Memphis Depay as one of the suitable candidates to replace the Portugal international.
However, the transfer is still in the initial stages and nothing has been finalised as of yet. Talks between the two clubs will take place in the coming days about the structure of the deal and the finances involved.
Memphis Depay a potential target for Atletico Madrid
The Netherlands international is out of a contract at the end of the 22/23 season. And so far, there has been no indication that Barcelona want him to continue playing for them. As a result, there is a good chance that he could walk out as a free agent when his contract runs out.
But for the last five months, he could be playing for Atletico Madrid if a deal can be struck. A permanent transfer could also be on the cards if Barcelona cannot convince Depay to extend his contract with them.
He has been in and out of the first team, and has found consistent time in the starting line-up hard to come by. Since joining the club from Lyon, he has scored 14 goals in 42 appearances. But, he hasn’t managed to stay consistent in his performances. And this has resulted in him being relegated to the bench for a significant part of the season.
It now remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old will follow in the footsteps of Luis Suarez and join the Colchoneros or decide to take up a new challenge altogether.
