Atletico Madrid chief Enrique Cerezo has commented on the possibility of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo returning to La Liga.
His remarks come at a time when Lionel Messi has been strongly linked with a return to Barcelona. The Argentine is out of a contract at the end of the season, and is not expected to renew with PSG any longer. He is also reportedly keen on moving back to Catalonia, and it is now up to the club to make it happen.
Atletico Madrid chief Enrique Cerezo speaks on Messi and Ronaldo return
‘I think it would be fantastic if Messi returned to La Liga, as would Cristiano Ronaldo,’ he said. ‘Both are still playing and it would be fantastic if they came back.’
While Messi is seemingly close to a return to Barcelona, it seems extremely unlikely that Cristiano Ronaldo will also come back to Spain. The Real Madrid icon is currently playing at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr after leaving Manchester United ahead of the 2022 World Cup. As a result, it is likely that he will see out his career there with a return to La Liga unlikely.
But, to add to Enrique Cerezo’s point, the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo made La Liga the best in the world during the last decade. And since the departure of the two legends, things have slowed down for the Spanish league. Perhaps the return of Messi could boost the overall value and the number of watchers of the league from the coming season.
