ATK was formed in 2014 when they started playing in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League (ISL). They were the most successful club in ISL history. In 2020, one of India’s largest football clubs Mohun Bagan joined hands with ATK and formed ATK Mohun Bagan and made its entry into the ISL.
However, changing the name to ATK Mohun Bagan hasn’t gone down well with the fanbase of Mohun Bagan. They have been demanding to remove “ATK” from the name of Mohun Bagan for a long time. Finally, now the management has started the process of removing “ATK” from the name of Mohun Bagan.
ATK Mohun Bagan can be renamed as Mohun Bagan Super Giants (MBSG)
According to reports in the Bengali newspaper Ei Samay, Debashish Dutta, the newly-elected secretary of the team, has already started the proceedings for an official change of name. The ATKMB officials are going to request Sanjiv Goenka, the majority stakeholder in the club, to rename the team Mohun Bagan SG (MBSG). SG could stand for Super Giants.
Sanjiv Goenka also owns the IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants and previously owned the now-dissolved IPL team, Rising Pune Super Giants. So, renaming ATK Mohun Bagan to Mohun Bagan Super Giants could mean more bonds between all his sports teams.
Sanjiv Goenka’s company is called RP Sanjiv Goenka (RPSG) Group, named after him and his father Rama Prasad Goenka. So it seems he prefers to keep the last two initials of his company, SG, in all his entities.
Therefore, it is highly likely that Sanjiv Goenka would give a go-ahead to the process of renaming ATK Mohun Bagan to Mohun Bagan Super Giants.
