Atalanta played out a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Bergamo, sharing the points in a heated contest. Josip Ilicic opened the scoring for the home team, shooting a left-footed effort from the edge of the box. David De Gea got a hand to the shot, but was unable to keep it out as Atalanta took the lead early.
La Dea would have several chances throughout the first half, most of them on the counter. However, they were not clinical enough to convert any more in the first period.
Manchester United equalised right before half time, courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo. Bruno Fernandes played a sublime back heel for his compatriot, who took one touch before burying the ball into the back of the net.
Duvan Zapata got his name on the scoresheet after assisting the first goal. The Colombian forward was played in by centre-back Palomino. While Harry Maguire raised his arm for offside, a VAR check proved that Zapata was well onside. The number 91 dribbled past a half-hearted tackle by Maguire and opened his body up to chip the ball over De Gea.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deployed three central defenders, with Maguire, Varana and Bailly making up the backline. The Ivorian made a crucial block in the box to deny the home team any more goals. A similar formation was used by Gian Piero Gasperini of Atalanta.
Cristiano Ronaldo would double up in the final minutes of the game, drilling a low effort past Musso. The striker managed to salvage an important point for Manchester United in the Champions League.
United currently stand at the top of the table with 7 points from three games, and turn their attention to the Manchester derby in the weekend. Atalanta, in third place, will travel to Cagliari in Serie A.
