Ashley Barnes has announced that he will be leaving Burnley at the end of the current season. The forward scored one of the goals in their 2-1 win over Middlesbrough which helped them seal promotion to the Premier League for next season.
His contract runs out in June, and he has decided not to renew it at this stage. As a result, he will be leaving as a free agent and could join a club of his choosing.
Ashley Barnes announces Burnley departure after gaining promotion
“After a difficult season to be relegated the way we did, it’s phenomenal to come back and get straight back up.
“This is the end of my era as a Burnley player. I’m quite emotional about scoring. It’s time to move on. It’s one of those things. I am happy for the staff, the players and the fans. They’ve been through some tough times and it’s nice to give it back to them today,” Ashley Barnes said.
“I want to enjoy every moment. The job is done, but now we want to be champions and finish it.”
Barnes has scored six goals and provided three assists in 32 Championship games. And given that he is 33 years old, Burnley seem to be looking in another direction for a striker. He has spent nine years with the Clarets, and has established himself as an all-important player for them, but will now be moving on to a new challenge.
