Real Betis have officially confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Álvaro Valles on a five-year contract, marking a homecoming for the 27-year-old shot-stopper. After rising through the Betis youth academy earlier in his career, Valles returns to the Estadio Benito Villamarín on a free transfer following his departure from UD Las Palmas.

His signing adds further strength to Manuel Pellegrini’s squad as they gear up for a demanding 2025-26 campaign, including another European adventure in the UEFA Europa League.

A Familiar Face Returns to Benito Villamarín

Born in La Rinconada, Valles spent three formative years at Betis during his developmental years before moving on to Las Palmas, where he amassed an impressive 132 league appearances. The announcement of his return came via a video shared on Betis’ official social media platforms, symbolizing both nostalgia and renewed ambition.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper from La Rinconada returns to the club that was his home for three seasons, during his training period, with a contract for the next five seasons, until June 30, 2030.

This deal had been verbally agreed upon since the beginning of the year but was formally signed recently when Valles and his representatives visited the club’s offices.

Prolonged Pursuit Finally Pays Off

Betis’ interest in reacquiring Valles was no sudden move. The club’s recruitment team had been monitoring his contract situation for over a year, attempting several negotiations with Las Palmas. Despite their efforts, the Canary Islands outfit repeatedly turned down offers, hoping instead to secure Valles on an extended contract.

However, the goalkeeper stood firm in his desire to move back to Seville. His decision not to renew with Las Palmas saw him fall out of favor with successive managers, even though his performances had long proved his worth in both La Liga and Segunda División.

Sacrifices Made to Realize His Dream

Valles’ commitment to returning to Betis was demonstrated by the sacrifices he willingly made. Entering the final six months of his Las Palmas contract in January, he gained the freedom to negotiate with other clubs for the following season. Yet, instead of jumping at offers from across Spain and abroad, Valles took the difficult path, prepared to sit out an entire season if it meant fulfilling his goal of returning home.

In February, shortly after the winter transfer window closed, Valles and Las Palmas agreed to a mutual contract termination. Relocating to Seville, he trained independently, awaiting his long-desired reunion with Betis.

Just over ten days ago, he finally arrived at the Verdiblanca offices to sign his contract, which became official today, Tuesday, and thus begin a new era as the Verdiblanca first-team goalkeeper.

Strengthening Betis Between the Posts

The acquisition of Valles fills the vacancy left by Rui Silva’s transfer to Sporting CP earlier this year. With Adrián and Fran Vieites struggling for consistency during the latter stages of last season, Betis’ technical department identified the need for reliable reinforcement in goal.

While further additions may still be considered depending on Vieites’ future, the signing of Valles provides Manuel Pellegrini with a strong option to command the defensive line during their upcoming domestic and continental assignments.

Interestingly, Ligue 1 outfit Olympique de Marseille had expressed keen interest in securing Valles’ signature, reportedly offering better financial terms. However, the emotional lure of returning to his boyhood club outweighed monetary gains.

Wider Changes at Las Palmas

Valles isn’t the only departure from Las Palmas this summer. Promising winger Alberto Moleiro has sealed a move to Villarreal, penning a contract until June 2030. This move could have wider repercussions across Spanish football, as Villarreal might now consider selling Alex Baena to Atletico Madrid for a reported €50 million.
