Jack Dorsey, co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter, is inching closer on rivaling social media giants Facebook and Snapchat, and yes, even his own creation that is now under the ownership of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. This is after Bluesky Social, a decentralized social network, finally entered its beta testing phase in preparation for its upcoming launch soon.
Jack Dorsey Beta Testing New Social App amid Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover
The news had emerged a week ahead of Tesla chief Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover that resulted in the exit of top executives of the microblogging site and evoked multiple opinions about how Musk would run the platform. Dorsey announced that his decentralized social app Bluesky is seeking beta testers.
“The next step is to start testing the protocol. Distributed protocol development is a tricky process,” the company shared in a news release last Tuesday. “It requires coordination from many parties once a network is deployed, so we’re going to start in private beta to iron out issues. “As we beta test, we’ll continue to iterate on the protocol specs and share details about how it works. When it’s ready, we’ll move to the open beta,” it added, sharing a link to sign up for the beta test’s waitlist.
According to the announcement, the new app would make use of a federated social network, where numerous sites work together to provide services, known as an Authenticated Transfer Protocol (AT Protocol). Dorsey shared last week on Twitter that Bluesky intends to be “a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it”
Bluesky was initially founded by Twitter in 2019 to help develop a similar decentralized concept for the social media giant. Dorsey stepped down from Twitter’s board in May 2022 and quit as Twitter CEO in November 2021.
Dorsey stepped down from the company’s board in May this year, had expressed regret over how things played out with Twitter, and it appeared that he was open to working with other platforms to solve the current problems with social media in today’s world.
