Arpinder Singh becomes 1st Indian to Win Mens Triple Jump Gold in Asian games 2018

India’s Arpinder Singh won a gold medal, though his fellow countryman Rakesh Babu AV finished sixth in Men’s Triple Jump on the 11th day of the 2018 Asian Games on Wednesday.

 

Arpinder Singh covered a distance of 16.77 to seal his gold medal. This is the first medal in 48 years for India in the sport of Triple Jump at the Asian Games.

Despite a foul in the first attempt, Arpinder managed to reach 16.58 m in his second attempt. He reached 16.77 m in his third attempt. Arpinder continued with his impressive results with an effort of 16.08 m in his fourth attempt. Three out of his six jumps was invalid, but his three valid jumps did the trick for him. This is India’s 10th gold medal. Uzbekistan was second and China was third in the event.

 

 

Arpinder Singh is a former bronze-medallist from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He is a national record holder with the personal best of 17.17 m, which he recorded in Lucknow. He had also finished fourth in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast. Arpinder had done well during the qualification stage, taking the top spot in Group B to enter the final in style. The Punjab athlete has registered the best attempt of 16.39 meters to finish ahead of Namibia’s Roger Haitengi who jumped 16.36m.

With India’s 10th gold medal today, their medal tally rose to 53, including 20 silver and 23 bronze medal.
