The World Cup qualifier between Morocco and Guinea was abandoned following the chaos that ensued in the capital of Guinea, Conkary. A representative of the elite national army unit said that they had captured president Alpha Conde. They proceeded to dissolve the institutions of the country.

Vahid Halilhodzic, the coach of Morocco, told French newspaper L’Equipe that ‘gunshots could be heard (in Conakry) all day’. The coup attempt in Guinea has made the players and their coaches fear for their safety, and while they are taken care of, they will only relax once they are out of the situation.

Liverpool are working hard to try and fly their player Naby Keita out of the country following the armed coup that has caused chaos in the city.

A Liverpool spokesperson said. ‘We are satisfied that he is safe and well cared for.

‘The situation is fluid and we will maintain regular dialogue with the relevant authorities as we work to get Naby back to Liverpool in a timely and secure manner.’

The airports are still close in Guinea, which is preventing Liverpool from going through with the flight to bring him back home. However, they are confident that they will go through with the ‘rescue’ once they have the approval of the authorities needed.

Sevilla trio Bono, Youssef En-Nesyri and Munir El Haddadi, with the Moroccan national team are also stuck in Conkary. The Spanish club have also commented on the situation, requesting the fans to be calm and have confirmed that the players are safe.
