Argentina’s Olympics 2024 opener against Morocco ended in a 2-1 defeat in controversial fashion. The referee added 16 minutes of additional time at the end of the game, which prompted a strong negative reaction from the Moroccan fans.

To worsen the situation, Argentina scored an equaliser in the lengthy amount of stoppage time, fighting back from 2-0 down. This sparked outrage from fans as they rushed onto the pitch to attack the Argentine players. Those in the stands also threw objects such as bottles and flares at the players.

A lengthy break followed after the incident, and more twists followed. Hours later, the referees eventually overturned Argentina’s equaliser after consultation with VAR, causing the Albiceleste to get frustrated as well.

The incident has not only brought out the need for improved security at the Olympics, but also the strong reaction against Argentina following their Copa America victory celebrations. The senior team were streamed signing a racist song against French footballers of African descent.

This has sparked outrage from all over the footballing world, and the people in Paris are clearly making their voices heard.
