Argentina, Germany and France have been dumped out of the Olympics along with Australia, Romania, Honduras, South Africa and Saudi Arabia as the rest of the teams progress into the quarter-finals of the competition.Â
Argentina had a difficult task ahead of them since they needed to beat Spain to make it into the knockout stages. They only managed to come away with a 1-1 draw, with Mikel Merino scoring shortly after the hour mark for La Roja.
TomĂ¡s Belmonte equalised for Argentina late, but it was not enough for them to make it to the top two of the group as Egypt got ahead of them on goal difference.
Germany suffered a similar fate, coming up with a draw against Ivory Coast. Benjamin Heinrichs gave the opposition the lead in the second half before Eduard Lowen put the ball into the right goal to equalise for Die Mannschaft. However, it was not enough for them to make it to the next round since Ivory Coast have one more point than them as a result of the draw.
France had the most disappointing exit of all the big teams eliminated at this stage, losing 4-0 to hosts Japan in their final game of the group stage. Randal Kolo Muani was sent off for the French, and they finished the game with 10 men. Takefusa Kubo, Hiroki Sakai, Koji Miyoshi and Daizen Maeda scored the four goals for the hosts of the tournament to take them to the knockout stages.
